***********

In the November 25th issue of Parade Magazine, in the "Parade Picks" section a brief called "Checked In" by Jacob Tomsky gave advice on how to essentially lie to a hotel to get out of the cancellation fee.

PAII President and CEO, Jay Karen crafted a response to the editor of Parade magazine to explain why cancellation policies are important and how the impact of cancelling at a hotel versus a B&B are completely different.

Read the letter below:

Dear Editor,

I was honestly stunned to see listed in the brief "Checked In" article by Jacob Tomsky ("Parade Picks" section, November 25, 2012) advice on how to essentially lie to a hotel to get out of a cancellation fee. Mr. Tomsky says someone who wants to avoid a cancellation fee that comes with a same-day cancellation should switch a reservation to the next week, wait a day and call back to cancel.

Generally, when travelers make reservations at hotels or B&Bs, there is an agreement made to adhere to certain policies and rules, among them being a cancellation policy. These policies are put in place to reasonably protect hoteliers and innkeepers from losing perishable inventory. The closer one gets to the date of stay, the harder it is for a hotel or B&B to resell a room that was put back into inventory due to a cancellation. Same-day cancellations can be nearly impossible to recoup.

Take the case of a four-room B&B. If someone books a room for a weekend and cancels at the last minute, that traveler has spoiled 25% of that innkeeper's inventory. Imagine doing the same at a restaurant - booking 25% of all the tables, and then backing out last minute. While a 300-room hotel might be able to absorb a last-minute cancellation here or there on account of the occasional unscrupulous traveler, a B&B really cannot. And still, hotels deserve better than that.

We know that travelers are forced to make last-minute cancellations for many legitimate reasons, and most small business owners are happy to work with these guests. Innkeepers and hoteliers have very challenging jobs - don't make things worse by encouraging dishonest behavior. Shame on Mr. Tomsky for suggesting people circumnavigate policies they agreed to - and shame on Parade for printing it.

Sincerely,

Jay Karen
President & CEO

B&Bs Kick Gas! Gas prices are rising and innkeepers are coming to the rescue with a “kick gas” promotion. To help relieve pain at the pump for travelers, inns and B&Bs throughout the U.S. and Canada are going the extra mile offering gas saving of all kinds. Kick high hotel parking fees, cookie cutter room designs, toaster-waffles breakfasts and exorbitant hotel fees to the curb. This year travelers will enjoy a welcome with a smile, warm hospitality and plenty of extra value at North America’s inns and B&Bs offering complimentary breakfasts, refreshments, beverages, wi-fi and much more, plus packages designed to help drivers save at the pumps.
Look for special offers from inns and B&Bs coast-to-coast extending gas deals, gas rebates, car tune ups, rewards for eco-friendly drivers, and fuel-efficient driving tips. And while you refuel the body, mind and soul at a country inn or B&B, your car will benefit and so will your wallet.

"Quiet Inn on the San Antonio River Walk Inn on the Riverwalk is located at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac overlooking the San Antonio River Walk, a network of pedestrian-friendly walkways through the heart of downtown San Antonio. Listed in the book 1,000 Places to See Before You Die, the river walk draws millions of visitors each year and is one of Texas’s most popular attractions. The tree-lined Inn on the Riverwalk puts its guests far enough from the river’s main tourism spot to feel private and secluded, but close enough for easy access. The riverside’s charming restaurants, shops, and bars are all within a 5- to 10-minute walk.
The inn is made up of three guesthouses: the main inn, a three-story Victorian home that dates back to 1916, and two smaller, Craftsman-style homes. Each individually decorated guest room comes with abstract paintings created by innkeeper Johanna Gardner and looks out onto gorgeous views of the river walk. Some even have private porches.
Each morning, chefs serve a hot breakfast in the dining room of the main inn. The menu changes daily, but may include chorizo, hash browns, and fluffy pancakes. Grab a seat on the outdoor terrace to dine amid views of the San Antonio River, or order in—this Getaway includes one morning of breakfast in bed served in your room from 9 to 9:30 a.m.
San Antonio, Texas: Historic Missions near Picturesque River Walk In the late 1920s, architect Robert H. H. Hugman designed an urban park around the San Antonio River—a space he envisioned as an American version of Venice where people could shop and dine along the waterfront. Completed in 1941, the 2.5-mile river walk still serves as a vital artery in the heart of San Antonio as it wends its way past cafés, hotels, bars, and shops.
Located one story below street level, the waterway is flanked on either side by stone pathways, quiet waterfalls, and towering cypress trees. The winding river-walk path reveals little surprises along the way, such as picturesque restaurants, public art installations, and cardboard cutouts of Davy Crockett. A new extension connects the river walk to the four-story San Antonio Museum of Art, where you'll find more than 25,000 sculptures and paintings that range from Roman antiquities to contemporary art.
Also neighboring the river walk is the Alamo. Thanks to the 1836 battle that made it a symbol of Texas independence, the Alamo has become the most visited tourist site in the state. It's actually one of five historic Spanish missions clustered around the San Antonio River. The largest, Mission San José, lies just 5 miles south of downtown. Its famed rose window is once again on display following an extensive renovation".

Day of the Dead Art Activity at McNay Art Museum

<itunes:author>Johanna Gardner</itunes:author>

By Mike Barus

Air travel to Bed and Breakfast in San Antonio is no longer considered a luxury only available for the wealthy and is now almost essential to our way of life. Instead of driving hundreds of miles to visit friends and family, attend a business meeting, or enjoy a vacation hotspot, a flight can whittle your travel time to a couple of hours instead of a couple of days. Also, more and more individuals are seeking to explore all corners of the world where car travel is prohibited. Although air travel is a great deal less expensive today than in days past, everyone is always looking the best deals available. If you are in the market to find cheap airfare, consider your options before you buy the first ticket available.

Well - we did have the ghost hunters of San Antonio come visit us a few years ago - it was an up all night event going through all the rooms with tools and flash lights. Oh well ....at least our place doesn't 'scare' people away! LOL.

Here's a few bed and breakfasts that may be haunted:

Haunted houses and scarefests are fun (at least to me), but what's really scary are houses that are really (according to some anyway) haunted.
BnBfinder.com came up with a list of bed-and-breakfasts that have a reputation for being haunted:slamming doors, mysterious footsteps, flashing lights and all.

St. Francis Inn in St. Augustine, Fla.
Lily, of Lily's guestroom, will be happy to welcome you with wide open (and ghostly) arms. As a servant at the inn during the mid-19th century, she and the owner’s young nephew carried on with a secret romance. When their love affair was discovered, Lily was let go from her duties causing the nephew, who was told never to see her again, to take his life. Still searching for her lost love, guests have spotted a mysterious figure dressed in white roaming the halls of St. Francis Inn. Unexplained noises, icy touches and other paranormal occurrences also have been reported in the room.

Battery Carriage House in Charleston, S.C.
Feel like you’re being watched? You just might be if you’re staying in Room 10 at the 1843 Battery Carriage House Inn. It’s home to a “gentleman ghost,” a young college student whose family once owned the house and who leaped to his death from the rooftop for an unknown reason. Rattling shutters and glowing orbs are just a couple of the ways he makes his presence known. You also might wake in the middle of the night and find him sitting by your bedside. He’s happy to stay the night…you just need ask.

Green Mountain Inn, Stowe, Vt.
Don’t let the sound of tap dancing on the roof of Room 302 at the Green Mountain Inn disturb you. It’s just Boots Berry, a former inn horseman who was born in 1840 in that very room. He became a local hero after saving passengers on a runaway stagecoach; but, a fondness for alcohol cost him his job. Boots aimlessly wandered the country, eventually landing in a New Orleans prison where he got his nickname from a fellow prisoner who taught him how to tap dance. After being released, Boots made his way back to the inn where he fell to his death while rescuing a young girl stuck on the roof during a snow storm.

National Hotel and Restaurant in Jamestown, Calif.
At the 1859 Historic National Hotel and Restaurant there’s one guest, “Flo,” who checked in but never checked out. Back in the late 1800s, she was set to marry the love of her life, Henry, before he was killed by a drunkard’s bullet the day before they were to be wed. Flo was later found in her wedding dress, dead from a broken heart. Guests staying in second floor rooms have reported lights flickering, doors slamming and even the faint sounds of crying as she waits to be reunited with her love.

Are you shying away from staying at a B&B because you’re not sure what to expect? Research shows that B&Bs and country inns are sorely misunderstood. We’re here to explain why B&Bs are a better way to stay. Younger travelers think B&Bs are for “oldies” and others believe the B in B&B stands for boutique or expensive. Let’s debunk some of those B&B myths and learn more about today’s B&B experience.

“But I’ll have to eat with people I don’t know!”

Today’s B&Bs are split with about half offering private tables for those who’d rather not eat breakfast with others and the other half serving family style so guests can meet one another. Some innkeepers even serve breakfast in the room. And just to set the record straight, you won’t be eating Cheerios with the owner’s kids either, separate living quarters for the innkeepers and guests are standard at all B&Bs.

“I don’t want to share a bathroom!”

According to the Professional Association of Innkeepers International and BedandBreakfast.com’s innkeeper surveys, more than 97 percent of B&Bs offer private baths in some if not all rooms. For those looking to economize on rates, a shared bath option is available in approximately 12 percent of B&Bs.

“It’s so expensive!”

Actually, when you add up all the extras including complimentary breakfast, snacks, beverages, wi-fi, movies and parking, then compare prices to local hotels in your travel destination, chances are you will find as much as a $175 per day savings. We recently compared Boston B&Bs to hotels, and here’s what we found. When the hotel’s higher rates were figured in, we realized a daily savings of $175 a day!

“B&Bs are only for couples”

While every B&B has some romantic aspect to it, there are plenty of inns and B&Bs that specialize in other aspects of travel. You’ll find that inns B&Bs are a better way to stay for families, business travelers, even those traveling with pets.

"They’re old buildings and I need my wi-fi connection"

Recent surveys of innkeepers conducted by BedandBreakfast.com show that more than 91 percent of inns and B&Bs offer complimentary wi-fi connections. Innkeepers throughout North America understand that guests travel with a full load of tech-items. Many are adding iPod docking stations and power strips to rooms to allow plenty of wattage for powering up tech toys

Top Ten Reasons to Stay at a Bed and Breakfast in San Antonio

<itunes:author>San Antonio Lodging</itunes:author>

Tied of the same old stark hotel or motel room? Why not choose a B&B? The biggest reason to leave your old hotel behind is… Cha Ching – the added value. Today’s B&Bs are simply a better way to stay for travelers seeking more for their travel dollars. Take a peek at the top ten reasons bed and breakfasts and country inns make a better and a more affordable way to stay.

Reason 10: Put your nickels and dimes away. Heck, put the $5 bill for the bottle of water back in your wallet! No mini bars here! Research from BedandBreakfast.com reveals that more than 92 percent of B&Bs offer complimentary afternoon refreshments, wine and cheese/hors d’ouevres receptions or evening desserts. More than 50 percent of B&Bs offer stocked snack and beverage pantries 24-7 and we’re sure that 100% of today’s B&Bs will offer you a glass or bottle of water and tell you to put the cost toward your vacation!

Reason 9: Stay plugged in. Complimentary wi-fi & calls. Say goodbye to that $20 daily fee for wi-fi access. Nearly 90 percent of B&Bs and country inns offer complimentary wi-fi according to BedandBreakfast.com surveys. The other ten are working on getting it. Nearly 100% of today’s B&Bs offer complimentary local or long distance phone calls. When’s the last time you saw a pay phone anyway? They’re a dying breed.

Reason 8: Great rates! According to the Professional Association of Innkeepers International (PAII – (pronounced PIE) don’t you just love that a B&B organization is named after a yummy treat?) the average daily rate for B&Bs is ???. When we compared this to city hotels of like levels, the B&B rate came in lower, and that doesn’t take in to consideration all the extras.

Reason 7: When’s the last time you met the owner of the hotel? And when is the last time he or she carried your bag to your room? Pick a B&B and read their reviews. Inngoers rave about the fabulous hospitality and friendship that innkeepers offered during their stay. In fact, for many B&B travelers, the innkeeper was what made the stay special.

Reason 6: Free parking. OK, we’ll admit, not all B&Bs offer free parking, but last time BedandBreakfast.com surveyed innkeepers, 95.3% said they did. Even in the city, B&B rates for parking average around $25 vs. as high as $50/nightly in hotels.

Reason 5: Flat screens, fireplaces & whirlpool tubs: Usually reserved for the Presidential Suite in a hotel, increasingly B&Bs offer amenities including flat screen TVs, in-room fireplaces, steam or multi-jet showers and deep Jacuzzi tubs.

Reason 4: Bed is half their name: Looking for fabulous beds? Nearly 100 percent of B&Bs offer high thread count sheets, feather beds, pillow libraries and down comforters at no additional cost to guests.

Reason 3: Breakfast is the other half of their name: Take a family of four to the breakfast buffet at a resort hotel, and you’re looking at upwards of $100 to feed the whole family. Bed and breakfasts all offer breakfast – it’s their signature selling point and half their name. From five course candlelit breakfasts to lavish continentals, most innkeepers offer a breakfast to fuel you for the entire day.

Reason 2: They really will leave the light on! Arrive at 2am, and you may not see a cherry innkeeper greeting you, but you will always find a personalized welcome, no matter what time you arrive from innkeepers who genuinely care about your safe trip and will call you by name.

Reason 1: Cookies, yes! Cookie cutter? No. No two B&Bs are alike. As independently owned small lodging properties, each one offers something new and different. No big box look to B&Bs ranging from urban chic to historically preserved mansions and homes.

San Antonio, Texas -- Inn on the Riverwalk in San Antonio, Texas was selected as Best of Southwest in the annual Best of BedandBreakfast.com Awards, 2010-2011.
"BedandBreakfast.com surveys show that independent reviews are the most important factor when choosing a B&B. In fact, according to BedandBreakfast.com's most recent survey, 96% of consumers consider reviews to be somewhere between important and essential when selecting a place to stay, and 12% will not make a reservation at a property without them. We're delighted that inngoers concur that Inn on the Riverwalk is deserving of its accolades from travelers," explained BedandBreakfast.com's Sandy Soule, one of the most highly recognized authors and a spokeswoman for the B&B industry. Here's an excerpt from one of our reviews: "This was the first time to stay at the Inn on the Riverwalk, have to say was the best vacation we have had. The room was beautiful with a patio overlooking the river, great place for coffee in the morning. The staff was excellent, helpful in every way making diner reservations for us and giving geat advise on where to eat. It was also enjoyable to have a hot breakfest made by the chef every morning. Perfect location on the riverwalk walking distance from any where you would want to go. While there we got a chance to see Johanna perform a beautiful wedding ceremony on the river. We will be back in march for a family friends wedding, know it will be amazing, cant wait!"

The event was hosted by Boudros restuarant on the Riverwalk. Johanna successfully was able to raise her bail of $2000, so she got out ok, but everyone at the Inn and the MDA staff had a good time helping raising money to help Jerry's Kids.
